On Prayer

Hi Everyone,

Perhaps one of the biggest things that I've learned throughout this entire ordeal is the power of prayer.  What would life be like without prayer?  I can only imagine!  It won't be good, that's for sure.  This means of communicating with God is such a great gift.  What a joy it is to unlock its mysteries and exercise its power!

My small group is finishing up our study on Ephesians.  As I prepared for the study last night, this verse jumped at me.  I have always known the first part of it, perhaps because of a song entitled, "Keep on Praying" by Hosanna Integrity.  But I don't recall ever really studying the rest of the verse.  It goes...

Ephesians 6:18 (NIV)
18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

Ephesians 6:18 (NASB)
 18With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints,

MacArthur gives a great commentary on this verse:

This verse introduces the general character of a believer's prayer life:
1) "all prayer and petition" focuses on the variety;
2) "at all times" focuses on the frequency;
3) "in the Spirit" focuses on submission, as we line up with the will of God;
4) "be on the alert" focuses on the manner;
5) "all perseverance" focuses on the persistence;
6) "all the saints" focuses on the objects.

Other verses on prayer which touch on the same characteristics of prayer:

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
 16Be joyful always; 17pray continually; 18give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Romans 12:12
12Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

Philippians 4:6-7
6Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:26-27
 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

Matthew 26:41
41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."

Mark 13:33
33Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.

Luke 11:9
 9"So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

Luke 18:7-8
7And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"

1 Samuel 12:23
23 As for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by failing to pray for you. And I will teach you the way that is good and right.

I know that if you are reading this now, that you have been a faithful prayer warrior for Chevy, and I thank you for that.  My prayer for you is that in praying for Chevy, you yourself have grown closer to the living God.  Chevy is doing great!  She still has some minor side effects of the drug she's taking now, such as bad acne.  But nothing major, praise God!  Her hair is growing back.  She will have some tests done next month.  I will keep you posted on that.  Most of all, I believe she has peace.  I still don't know why this is all happening, but I trust that God has a plan and that He will see us through.  God is good!

In Him,
Cheryl
